Travis Vermilye Root and Reverie
“Root and Reverie” explores the dialogue between nature and digital creation. Inspired by concepts of biomimicry, networks, and branching structures, I utilize procedural modeling and particle systems in 3D software to generate organic forms that resemble tree and root growth. These structures are then used as a base for subsequent forms that mimic fungi and slime mold growing on and around the branches. The 3D structures are printed with plastic that also contains wood particles, completing this amalgamation between digital, physical, artificial, and natural. The two-dimensional pieces on display are created using a technique I call ‘digital fumage,’ borrowing from the flame-painting technique used by the Surrealists. Each image is a composite of multiple extreme shallow depth of field renders in 3D software, generating organic, soft forms that almost seem to be created by wispy smoke from a candle flame.
