Gayla Lemke   Forbidden
Detail of “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”

Throughout history, ancient stories have influenced society…especially in the context of gender and power dynamics. These cultural myths breed misogyny and a lack of empathy which then impact modern reality.

At the heart of the work in “Forbidden” lies the myth of Eve and the forbidden fruit – a narrative that has long been used to justify the oppression of women. Using ceramic books, abstract sculpture, tree forms and text, “Forbidden” expresses the need for empathy and understanding in a time when we need to break free from narratives that dehumanize and divide us.

“Cassandra,” Oil on canvas, 24″ x 24″

My oil paintings for this show were all created in the tumult and anxiety of the past twelve months. Some reflect that angst; some reflect a more light-hearted whimsy and little sparks of hope.
