Nature Noticed and Also Ignored – Rachael Amos
I had declared to myself that Nature would be my topic, especially thoughts and images brought to mind by reading “The Forest Unseen,” by David George Haskell. But I found that I wouldn’t keep to my declaration, and that I ignored or subverted Nature as often as I focused on it.

The drawings for the most part began as improvisations; some are quite extensively developed further; others left pretty much as they occurred to me in the first moments.

Ductile Compression 2.0 – Joshua Goss
Joshua Goss, B.Sc. Geology, MFA Metals, is a sculptor/artist who uses fabrication and blacksmithing techniques to simulate geological processes and transformations.

Ductile Compression 2.0 is characterized by the uplift and faulting that originates from the collision of tectonic plates. As mountains rise, fractures and folds expand through the Earth’s crust. With exposure to the atmosphere, organic textures are etched into underlying structures and patterns are revealed. The series of work exhibited in Ductile Compression 2.0 embodies the idea of time and material. Time is shown by the movement and offset of the layers – over millions of years horizons that were once flat become juxtaposed. Iron is a result of mineralization; a product of metamorphism. Metamorphism is a change that sedimentary and igneous rocks undergo when exposed to time, heat and pressure.

NOW SHOWING, 9/18 – 10/4 JENNIFER PETTUS & DANIA PETTUS

OPENING RECEPTION : 6 – 10 PM

Second Acts – Jennifer Pettus
Inspired by theatrical devices like lighting, props, exaggerated palettes, and costuming, Second Acts experiments with the amplified and temporal qualities of theatrical story-telling and story-experiencing. It likewise speaks to the second acts we may experience in life. Like a play’s protagonist, sometimes we must experience the unexpected in order to move forward.

Chemigrams and a Printer – Dania Pettus
Dania Pettus’ new work is a reconnection to her previous photographic work. She uses a method called Chemigrams, which is a filmless darkroom process that allows her to accept the unknown look of the final image. The images are made on photographic paper, scanned, and printed digitally.

Sandra Azcarate, in presenting “The Nature of Dogma” at Edge Gallery, is exploring how dogma can very quickly become oppressive and destructive. Oftentimes, religions and philosophies begin with ideas meant to enlighten the human spirit but this can rapidly, if used by those intending to secure control and power over others, become tools of repression. I hope that people can work together to prevent this from happening.
