2019 Artist Statement   Alexandra Williams

Art is multifaceted. It poses a strong affect on mood, emotion, and facilitates the transmission of ideas . In many ways, art is my favorite form of communication. For me, it starts by communicating the emotions of the artist through the colors they choose, application technique, and composition. It is then presented to be translated by the reading of the viewer. As the artist, how can I utilize and materials, mediums, form, composition to function as a soul language? My goal is for my work to be beneficially therapeutic to me (as the artist), and to the viewer.

Having majored in Art Therapy, I firmly believe in the influence art has. In the past, I have focused on more technical applications and more traditional subject matter. After some hard years, and the loss of my parents and step-father, my art started showing more organic forms, and serving as a way for me to filter through feelings of fear and loss. I put a strong focus on achieving a cathartic experience for both artist and viewer. It gave me a place where those feelings and fears could be given a direction. They could be addressed, moved, and through the process of painting, turned into a kind peace. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, I would like my artwork to serve as a fun mystery or puzzle that’s begging the viewer to solve. Much of my inspiration comes from nature and the spaces that exhibit a sense of time and age. I find myself taking comfort in time-glossed minerals from deep within the earth, flowers in full bloom, and in living organisms. My palette is largely dictated by emotion, and the technique varies.
